ARE THEY SERIOUS?

Posted on Wednesday 1 August 2007

Well today was pretty much a joke and so was yesterday but both for their own reasons… Yesterday the conditions were much like the first day but more hostile and dangerous, so much that they postponed the race for 5 hours!!! so we thought what can we do in a 5 hour postponement and we came up with the idea that we would go bowling and subway among other interesting things to do around here… once we finished those activities we then went back to the club at 4pm to see if the race committee had made a decision to actually race us or not - when we arrived we found out that they had postponed it another 2 hours longer!!! A 7 hour postponement!!! Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? So Ryan Ben and I went out along the pier where we saw the full extent of the waves that we would possibly be sailing in that afternoon if they decided to send us out. I feared for my life when I saw those waves crashing over the lighthouse at the end of the pier and wetting us as we ran away. We still had an hour to go so we went to a beach shack to have a few cokes whilst overlooking the shredded up water over the ocean and watching the Dutch trying to surf it. We eventually made our way back to the club at 6pm and the race committee finally made the decision to call off racing for the day… deeerrrrrr!!! We were really happy though - we couldn’t be bothered sailing after sitting around all day waiting. And then there was today… today was a joke… we hit the water at 10am for an 11am start and there was no wind so half the fleet count make the start yet the officials still started the races - lucky for me and the rest that didn’t make it it was a general recall!!! Then it started - black flag general after general all day. We got one race off in my fleet and I had a bad start due to the fact that we weren’t moving and there was a huge amount of tide but I caught back to around a top 5 position after catching up on the downwind only to see a power boat rush past me saying that the race was cancelled. That pissed me off for a top 5 would have been very good for my score. We all sailed back to the start and then the generals began again and when we finally got another race away there were 18 black flags in my fleet so I had a small fleet to race against. The winds were variable and I lost big time when I got caught on the wrong side of a shift and ended up 23 overall. Once that race finished they we waited for the others to finish then they wanted to move the start - we did and then waited for even longer in the hot sun for another race. After a while people just started sailing in due to pure frustration and the officials finally called it off. We got towed in and got in at 6.30pm that’s 8.5 hours on the water doing one race and not anything else because there was no wind… a lot of burnt faces and red skin at the end of the day - lucky I had a load of zinc on!!! I wonder what tomorrow has in store but overall so far this has been the weirdest and most frustrating regatta I have ever been to… Good fun though – they have free pasta meals for the sailors after sailing – hooray!!! Peace

It begins!!!

 IT BEGINSSSSSSSSSSS ——————>

Well today was the first day of racing and the first time i have sailed in more than a week since i last sailed at Rq in AUS - the time since i sailed due to sickness did not affect my sailing greatly i dont think but i think a combination of the time out of the boat and not being able to get used to the conditions out on the water and just regaining my strength didnt have me sailing to my full potential today. However this time off did give me an advantage - whilst all the other guys went out on the practice race yesterday when it was really windy made them some what more tired than what i was this afternoon. Todays racing was very interesting, my fleet had about 4 or 5 black flag generals and postponements which annoyed the hell out of everybody  because it meant we spent a full day on the water with only 2 races to do - i think it would have been alright if the conditions were a little less hostile than what they were but they thats the cards we were delt. An average of about 25 knots increasing in the gusts and huge rolling waves with breaking chop on top meant some crazy sailing and some pretty wild wipeouts were in store. Due to the sickness i have taken off some weight - this doesnt help in those kind of conditions but i was proud of myself because i stuck with it on the upwind and made a hell of alot of gains on the down wind due to my ability to get on and ride the hell out of some of those big waves - this was my strong point today.

My results today were a 15 and a 22 - not the best but its ok - now i have to better my results and stay atleast in the top 20 to achieve a good result overall. But the funny thing is aswell that once again ryan and i are together on the score board even tho we were in different fleets. i am beating him my 1 point - WEIRD (we basically had the same positions)

Opening ceremony yesterday was short and sweet - no big hoo haar - just a say hello, a few nibbles and that was about it. Now it is time to go to bed and rest up for tomorrow’s mischief and i think it is also supposed to be windier. Hmmmm

(the end of opening ceremony)

I HATE SICKNESS!!!

Posted on Wednesday 25 July 2007

Well hello again  :)

It has been a couple of days since my last update mainly due to the fact that i have been violently ill, sick and tired. It has been a hell couple of days with most of the days activities including sleeping in my bed and now and then making visits to the bathroom to be sick. Other than this minor set back i have been ok, missing everybody back home already, especially a few people who are very close to me. This is a constant feeling that i have been getting mostly because my mind has not been occupied at all and its the best thing in my life at the moment that i can think of. Otherwise i have found the limit of how fun the internet can be. Somewhere around here is someones wireless and i have been able tap into their high speed broadband, this has been a great bonus for us - however, but both ryan and i have suddenly lost interest in it because it is so readily available and we can so freely use it - The internet has lost its appeal!!!

Anyways on a much happier note today ryan and i went for a walk to go and see an Imax movie but on the way we got lost along the way and after finding ourselves on a straight road we thought we would just follow it so that we if we got even more lost it was easy to find home. But then the funniest thing happened - we found ourselves in town and we thought we would hire some bikes because we had had enough of walking and the only place close enough to our position was Central Train Station which was covered in a sea of bikes. We ventured into the station to try and find were we could find the bike hire and what do u know but our aussie mate Ben Price walks straight into us! I was shocked, Ryan was shocked and Ben was cacking his dacks, none of us could believe it that in the middle of this place and at that exact moment of time Ben got of his train after coming from Australia only to run into his team mates. Its both really creepy and funny!

Well that was the extent of the adventures today, i am feeling much better now - i am able to eat again and my head isn’t hurting anymore just an anannoying cough and stuffy nose. Nothing Subway alot of water and some drugs couldn’t fix!!! (cold and flew drugs by the way!!)

Until next time…

PeAcE OuT !!!!!!!

Finally Here

Posted on Saturday 21 July 2007

Finally here in Amsterdam

Well ryan and i have been awake for 27 hours and we have been really tired but its nothing a good sleep cant cure.. The trip was ok, food was good but the flights were long and boring, we spent a night in Hong Kong and that was pretty fun. We stayed at the novotel HK and it was really nice, we both walked around in our bathroabs and everything, then we went and checked out the local area and shopping centres and everything but the catch was that we didnt have our luggage.. The airline held onto it in the airport and we wernt allowed to take it with us. We have started a video diary and as soon as we figure out how to load it up we will so everyone can enjoy the pleasure of our worlds experience and other such experiences. After a good sleep last night the morning has come and today a friend here has told us that he will show us the local area and where the best party areas are.. we arnt planning to party anytime before the regatta but we thought we should atleast know our way around.

if anyone has any questions ryan and i will be open to email quite often because we have close access to the internet and msn most of the time just have to remember the time difference - 8 hours yesterday for back home (10am here = 6 pm home)

 STAY TUNED

Peace out

Almost There… Big Thanks!

Posted on Wednesday 18 July 2007

Well hello everyone

It has been a while hasn’t it. Over the past few months since my last entry has been a culmination of great strainig and demanding training both on the water and off the water in the gym and mentally aswell. Intense training has seen the potential of this individual - as i see it - exploded since the addition of more training sessions with our coach Scott Sinclair and the addtion of the Australian Sailing Team queensland coach Adrian Finglas. With the help of these two coaches both ryan and i expect great results as we now realise our potential and what we are actually capable of if we put our minds to it. To achieve success at this level it takes a commitment from everyone not just the coaches and the athlete and on that note i would like to thank all the people who have helped me along the way and who have put in the effort for ryan and i to go where we need to go.. without u guys we wouldnt be flying out tomorrow at 1.10pm.. My personal sponsors - Ronstan, Noosa Life and Fitness Centre, Seaway Marine, Patterson Laser Sales, and a special mention to the Australian Sailing Team and coaching clinics. Parents and friends - Mum and Dad and Brother, David and Denise Wilson for your house whilst we are in Brisbane and Kaitlyn Duignan and her family for accomidating us and feeding us for the last leg of our training for the past couple of weeks before we leave. And thankyou to Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron and Noosa Yacht and Rowing club and the Queensland laser accociation and the youth training squad for some great practise on water sessions.

Well its time for bed, a long flight tomorrow to Hong Kong for a night and i need to be fresh.. If i have forgotten anyone i am sorry your efforts do not go overlooked. Thanks and until the next report when we reach Amsterdam - Adiose Australia.. love you (you know who you are :)

World Regattas Are So Worth It

Posted on Wednesday 2 August 2006

If you ever want to do a major international regatta, don’t even think twice – just do it, it’s so awesome. Thankyou to everybody who encouraged and supported me along the way and helped my family with all those silly but have to know questions before we went – you were all so right - a special thankyou to Scotty, Peter Conde, and Al from Seaway Marine.

The experience of going to a World Regatta on the continent was mind blowing, the venue and the clubhouse was like Lake Cootharaba, but smaller and older. All the teams arrived with their coaches and entourages in huge Ford Transit Vans packed up to the max, towing huge made up trailers to hold their rubber duckies on the bottom with anything up to 8 lasers on the top. Then they all tried to offload in the same small carpark, consequently there were a lot of arguments and fights, as well as on the beach, the measurement, the start line, the scoreboard and of course the football – that was awesome to, we were in France while they got to the top – what a buzz. Well now I have landed back with a bit of a thud, I have 6 assignments due in the next two weeks, and I finally now have some time and access to the internet to let you know where I’m up to and what has happened over the last few weeks. It was really hard not having access to the internet to let you all know what was happening. I met so many new friends and travelled to so many new places and even went in and out of 11 airport systems and watched heaps of new movies on the planes. I travelled by plane, train, metro, bus, taxi, car hire, chauffeur, ferry and ate lots of new foods. Paris was fantastic, there was an annual music festival the night we arrived with concerts and bands all over the city, I even saw an organ repertoire at the Notre Dame! (that’s the cultural side of me). Then the trip was finished off with a surreal experience when I was a finalist at the Yachting Australia awards. That was such an honour, to meet such amazing yachtsmen, and VIP’s and Princess Anne as well, I still can’t believe I went to such an evening. I’m having break at the moment, trying to catch up on schoolwork and vegging a bit - I’ll be back sailing this week - CU all soon.

Posted on Monday 26 June 2006

Alright i have arived safely from paris to Bordeaux and we have driven to our destination in Hourtin were the regatta will be held. I have a boat and will start training tomorrow to get used to the fresh waters of france, taking into account that the sun sets here at 11:00 we might not finish racing to around 10:00 so i have to prepare for that. Also we are fortunate because there i a Australian Cafe right next to where we are staying so that helps alot. I have watched 2 surfing events already here on 3 beaches and they were really good - and right now it is 6:30 which makes it 2:30 at home. Well time to go - good morning and i will keep you posted when racing starts on 1st July. cya

Posted on Thursday 15 June 2006

Alrighy, hey everybody. Righ now its 2 days to go until i fly out to paris then eventually on to Hourtin, France for the Laser 4.7 World Championships. Preperation is almost final with the packing, and organising almost complete, however fitness and strength is still a priority and gym sessions are still full foward untill the last minute. I have just put my AUS stickers on my sail and eager to represent my family, my yacht club, my mates and AUSTRALIA when the times comes too use all its power to the possible best that i can achieve, i can only believe that that will be more than enough to get me over the finish line first. I have to thank all the people who have helped me allong the primary stages of my worlds campaign, these include the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club, Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, Live Sail Die, Ronstan, Noosa Life and Fitness Gym, Especially All and Marian at Seaway Marine - just to name a few. Anyway thats all for now must keep packing. Things to do…
